Our Practice

Our practice has a rich history, having served the Woodland community since the World War II era. The practice was originally founded by an ophthalmologist named Heinrich Graser, who practiced in Woodland throughout his career. Following his untimely death, Dr. Graser’s wife sold the records and equipment from his practice to Sheldon Smith in 1963. Dr. Smith had recently settled in Woodland with his family, and he decided to build his career here. Dr. Smith’s practice flourished: he relocated the office to its current location in 1970, fully remodeled the office in 1977, and later expanded in 1989 when he acquired the practice of another retiring optometrist named Walter Rice. Dr. Rice had practiced in Woodland for 25 years.

Dr. Smith’s son, Paul Smith, followed in his father’s footsteps to become an optometrist. Drs. Sheldon and Paul Smith practiced together during the 1990’s until Paul decided to start his own practice in Merced, CA. Sheldon continued to practice in the current location.

Dr. Smith hired Dr. Lisa Heuer as an associate in the summer of 2010. At the time, Dr. Heuer was working part-time in three different practices within the greater Sacramento area, but she most enjoyed the days she spent in Woodland. Within a few months, Dr. Heuer initiated discussions surrounding a potential transfer of ownership. Ultimately, Dr. Smith sold the practice to Dr. Heuer in April, 2011.

After more than 50 years on Walnut Street, Dr. Heuer relocated the practice to 433 College Street. Long-time locals know of this location as the Meier building, originally built in 1921 and refurbished in 2018. More details on the building history and the award-winning update are linked here.
